mike macdonaldNot too long ago we did a review of Canadien comedian Mike MacDonald’s “The Better Bootleg.” During this process we learned of his dire need for a liver transplant, and today we’re happy to report that a donor was found and MacDonald has underwent a successful surgery.

The procedure lasted a reported 7 hours, and doctor’s say that everything went as well as could be expected. MacDonald was obviously thrilled, and his brother John shed some light on how happy their family is.

“I’m relieved because now this means instead of this waiting game and hoping something happens before Mike’s health deteriorates, now he can start rebuilding his health,” John said.  “Hopefully, in six months from now Mike will be normal. I’m pretty sure, knowing my brother, that once he gets better he’s going to be out there campaigning and championing people to get out and fill out their donor cards. He will make it a mandate.”

Only a month ago, you could sense the urgency from Mike and his fans. Here’s a February 19 post on a Facebook page dedicated to fundraising for Mike’s liver:

“Good News–Bad News… The good news is I’m officially on the cadaver liver transplant list and my wife, Bonnie and I met with the doctor in Toronto who would perform the surgery and he was happy with my ‘numbers’ and my chances of survival during the surgery–He was also very optimistic about a ‘living donor’ and said if I had one the surgery could possibly be scheduled for late April. The bad news is it is their protocol not to seek living donors themselves so if their are still people out there who are serious about being a living donor you must phone the Toronto General Hospital at 416 340-4800 Ext. 6581 and tell them you wish to be a living donor for me (under my Christened name) Michel Alain MacDonald and follow their instructions. Thank you and God Bless you if you can help me or pray for me…”

An update about Mike’s liver transplant was posted just four hours ago. “Mike’s doing well enough that they will move him from the ICU sometime today. He no longer has a breathing tube and spoke with his wife Bonnie, before returning to sleep. He is doing great!”

MacDonald is loved in Canada so much that he recently won the Canadien Comic Legend Award. The comedian has had his ups and downs in life, struggling with addiction and bipolar disorder. This video below shows Mike talking about his efforts to find a new liver. Congratulations again to Mike MacDonald, and for all those struggling with health issues out there, stay strong.
